The origin of New Year's Eve is related to ancient legends and customs. Legend has it that in ancient times, there was a monster called "Nian" that would come out at the end of each year to harm people and livestock and damage crops. In order to avoid the "Nian" monster, on the last day of each year, people would cook meals in advance, put out the kitchen fire, seal the doors of their houses, and hide at home to have the "New Year's Eve dinner". This meal was very sumptuous because people were worried that something bad would happen after eating it. Later, people found that the "Nian" monster was afraid of red color, firelight and explosions. Therefore, on this day, every household would paste red spring couplets, set off firecrackers and stay up all night, gradually forming the customs of New Year's Eve to drive away the "Nian" monster and pray for peace. Through long-term inheritance and development, New Year's Eve has become one of the most important traditional festivals in China, an important time for the whole family to reunite and bid farewell to the old and welcome the new.
